Qaragisty is the capital of the Qaraghandy region (Qaraghandy Oblysy) in Kazakhstan. With 485,300 inhabitants (1 February 2014), it is currently the fourth largest city in Kazakhstan (behind Almaty , Astana and Schymkent).

Agriculture

In the wide steppes and semi-desert areas around Qaraghandy, cattle breeding, especially sheep breeding, is strongly developed. Cattle and pigs are kept and wheat is cultivated.Vegetables are grown in the surroundings; Mainly from potatoes. Small sunflower plantations and orchards are isolated.

 

Economy

The city is the second most important industrial center in Kazakhstan after Almaty. Above all the huge Kohlevorkommen have secured her this status. In Qaraghandy, the coal mining company Schubarkol Komir has its head office and operates a coal mine nearby. Also important is the metal industry, mechanical engineering, the chemical industry and the food industry. Two large fossil thermal power plants are located in the area.

 

Language

The official languages of Kazakhstan is Kazakh, and Russian shall be used on equal grounds.

 

Name of origin
The origin of the city name is controversial. One theory states that the Karagana bushes spread throughout the city were named for the city. Another theory states that the coal deposit is specific to the city.

 

Nationalities

The population of Qaraghandy counted about 150 nationalities. Qaraghandy is the place of origin for about 100,000 Russo-Germa, in Germany. Its share in the 1940s should have amounted to over 70 per cent of the population of the city. Current composition (2010): Russians 45.57%, Kazakhs 36.25%, Ukrainians 4.80%, German 3.31%, Tatars 3.05%, Koreans 1.57%, White Russians 1.16. 

Religions 

Holy Wwedenski Cathedral

The prevailing religions in Karaganda are Islam ( Sunnis ) and Christianity ( Russian Orthodox Church ) Karaganda is also the seat of the Roman Catholic bishopric Karaganda. There is also a Gospel Trinity Baptist Church founded in Karaganda, founded in 1948, and a Mennonite Brotherhood founded in 1957.

 

Transport

Qaraghandy owns the international airport “Sary-Arka”  ( Сары-Арка ) with the IATA-code. KGF, from which national and international flights exist. The airport is also used for military purposes. All 30 MiG-31 high-speed hunters operating in the service of Kazakhstan’s airspace defense are stationed in Qaraghandy.

Public transportation 

The main load of public transport (public transport) is carried by diesel-powered buses. The trolleybus operation lasted from 30 May 1967 to 20 April 2010.

Railroad 

Since 1953, Qaraghandy has been connected to the Turksib station in the south of the country, as well as to the North Kazakh stretchy network. The railway connection and the central location within Kazakhstan with the country’s largest marshalling yard are favorable conditions for economic development. There are direct international passenger connections to Moscow to the Kazan railway station and to Kiev.

Tramway 

Between 25 August 1950 and September 1997, an electric tram ran in the city. Three lines were operated:
  • Stary Gorod – Novy Gorod (1950-1978)
  • Staryj Gorod – Schachta No. 70 (? -1976)
  • Schachta 33/34 – Maikuduk, Combine Strojplassmass (1982-1997)

Initially the lines were operated with 

KTM-1Between 1982 and 1984 12 KTM-5 were delivered to Karaganda.

Highway 

Through Qaraghandy, the M36 road and the long east-west route A17, an important road in Kazakhstan.

 

Water Resources
Since 1971, the city has been supplied with water via the Irtysh Qaraghandy Canal.

 

Weather

The climate in Qaraghandy is extremely continental. The lowest recorded temperature was -42.9 ° C in 1938.
